The internet is a strange and fascinating place.
Websites like Facebook and Myspace are becoming more and more strange to me, while sites like Twitter and Blogger are fascinating me more. Facebook and Myspace are referred to as "networking" sites, but they are really just havens for young adults (some as young as 10-12!) to exploit themselves in a not-so-positive manner. I'm not sure I enjoy these sites' superficiality as much as I did in high school (but it's still, sadly, slightly addicting). I'm no longer interested in seeing my friends (in some cases, people I only vaguely know) post, basically, the same drunk picture or the same "sexy pose" over and over for the world to see. And, yes, I'm just as guilty - but trying to steer away from all that. Don't get me wrong, I think Facebook, in particular, is a great site for finding old friends and staying connected to people in general... But there are so many other aspects that I don't want to be bothered with: all those annoying applications; people I don't know attempting to 'friend' me; "relationship status" updates being announcing all the time; even the newly-added instant messager is kind of getting to me. Myspace is even worse! I can't count how many useless "application invites" I receive; or people and bands that I'm completely uninterested in knowing anything about "friending" me; or my friends' younger siblings and young girls from my high school behaving like twenty-somethings because they feel brave on the internet. It's a little sickening sometimes.
That is why I'm here. Lately, I've stumbled upon several blogs while Googling random interests of mine and have found some really great stuff! There is one that I have bookmarked and am now reading everyday: A Canadian girl who is teaching English in Tokyo started a blog to share her adventures while there... And it's so interesting! I spent 10 days in Tokyo a few years ago and fell in love with it... And also felt that 10 days wasn't nearly enough. Although I don't know this girl teaching in Tokyo, or ever intend to, I think of it more as reading a column in the newspaper. I love hearing about other people's daily experiences... As long as they aren't rants about how depressing it is to be grounded.
So, my goal here is to publish and share bits of my daily (or not) routine, findings, experiences, adventures, insights, and thoughts in general. Instead of posting bulletins on Myspace, or trying to explain my day by updating my status on Facebook, I will mostly be here from now on.
